![]() There has apparently been some success in getting the game to work through emulation or virtualization, but support on either operating system is not guaranteed as the developers have stated, "We are unable to support native Mac and Linux versions. One unfortunate consequence of this is that Mac and Linux clients are not available. Benjamin Pulido has brought us a new mod for Quake III Arena, its Quake 1 Arena, this has almost all the classic Quake maps, including textures and sounds. With today's release of the standalone client, the browser-based version of the game ceases to exist. Existing stats, clans, and profiles have all been preserved and are being brought into the game client so that a browser is no longer needed to view them. The transition to the standalone client won't have any effect on the existing subscription model - at least at this point. Today's announcement regarding the launch of the standalone client also mentions how it will allow the developers to "dedicate more time to updating in-game features without the worry of how ever-evolving web browsers will affect gameplay and performance." As before, Quake Live will continue to be a free-to-play game based on Quake III Arena. ![]()
